I am the founder of Embercombe, a 50-acre estate with charitable status on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in the UK. Embercombe’s mission is to inspire, and empower people to live in close relationship with nature and co-create a regenerative, flourishing future for all species.
I co-lead three of Embercombe’s core programmes, The Journey, The Hearth, and The Twin Trail,, as well as contributing to several others. Each of these programmes facilitates a journey into deep connection with life, love, and nature. Implicit in this is the ensuing desire to actively contribute to a peaceful, regenerative, and flourishing future.
REWILDING
Embercombe occupies a very beautiful upland valley, which spans 50 acres and is currently being rewilded.
For me ‘rewilding’ implies that we set aside the desire to control and enter into a collaborative relationship with nature that enriches all stakeholders, human and more than human.
Advocacy and action for the restoration of nature is essential. So is the growing of food. Our valley rewilds because this choice best serves Embercombe’s mission. Ultimately, we are all in the same situation and we face the same dilemma.
- How do we stem nature’s potentially catastrophic decline and enable the conditions whereby nature’s own natural systems can restore the land to full health?
- How do we achieve this while also growing and producing healthy, nutritious food, supporting farmers, and sustaining rural communities?
- How do we design, build, and inhabit cities that are beautiful, communal, peaceful, and dynamic?
Of course, it goes way beyond this. How do we transform society and create ‘a world that works for all’ (Embercombe’s vision)
